Here you'll find answers to questions we've been asked by facilitators. Whenever you ask a question that would be of interest to other facilitators, we'll add it here so everyone can benefit.

I want to add something to the retreat design (or remove something to make it shorter). Is that OK?
As much as we love the spirit of innovation, there is an integrity -- by which we mean a wholeness -- to the design that we expect all facilitators to honor. So we ask that you deliver the retreat as designed, nothing added, changed, or removed.
Reworking the design, removing elements, pulling out elements to create something else, adding new material (other than your own stories as shown in the design) -- all of that is out of bounds.
Why? Every time you change something in the design, the entire experience will be affected. It’s more than a matter of simply adjusting the timing. Adding an element can lead to overload, confusion, sidetracks for your participants. Removing something can have other unexpected results.
We’ve experimented extensively with the design and continue to do so. You may have observed this as you’ve attended different retreats. Sometimes the experiments are successful. Sometimes they are “lessons learned.”
We want you to use what we know works, so you can be successful right from the start.
Two caveats:
We will be providing you with one alternative design, adjusted to provide for an evening session the first day (as you’ve experienced with Jim). Other than the timing, it will be identical to the design in your manual.
You can do the alien portion of the retreat as a stand-alone piece to build interest in your retreat offerings. This can be done very effectively in a large group. We are working on a design for that and will provide it to everyone as soon as possible.
Can I share retreat materials with people who are not in my retreats?
You are welcome -- indeed, encouraged -- to use resources developed for you specifically to generate interest. The first is What Kind of World Do You Want? We will also soon have a series of emails designed to build interest.
Other than those specific tools, which we’ll be clear about their availability to you, all workshop materials (flipcharts, banners, handouts, interview protocols) that we provide to you are our proprietary intellectual property and are not to be published in any form (on your website or social media or anywhere else) without our express written permission. You are permitted to use them ONLY in the context of delivering a retreat.
This is different from other methods you may be familiar with, such as Open Space. We have chosen to exercise more quality control and to license these materials only to carefully selected individuals.
There’s another reason we are going to be strict about this: As you may have noticed, we intentionally keep the content of the retreat a bit of a mystery until people are in the room. It’s important they understand why they are there and the benefits they will get. But how the retreat will unfold? That’s best experienced in the moment as they go through the process. Sharing the materials publicly disrupts this experience.
So for the benefit of all certified facilitators, this rule will be strictly enforced.
This includes publishing photos of retreat materials such as flipcharts and banners that were used during a retreat. You can provide those privately for your participants (such as on a password-protected web page or in a private Facebook group) but not where they are publicly accessible.
If you’ve already published such materials somewhere, please take them down.
You can publish photos of your group, of course, as long as the retreat materials are not readable in the photos. You can see examples of such group photos on the public pages of leadershipphilanthropy.com.
If you have questions about any of this, please ask.
How does the per-participant license fee work?
As stated on the description of the Certification Program, whenever you deliver a Philanthropic Quest retreat as a Certified Facilitator, you will pay a materials and license fee of $700 per participant.
The fee is reduced to $275, in recognition of the different economics involved in working independently, in two situations:
You’re an independent consultant or facilitator (not a staff person employed by an organization) delivering the retreat to client organizations or groups of individuals.
You’re a staff person but you’re delivering the retreat to an organization other than your employer — and that organization is compensating you for your services. In other words, you’re doing this as a “side gig” separate from your employment.
The per-participant fee is due 30 days before the date the retreat is scheduled to start, based on the estimated number of participants. If you end up with more or fewer participants at the time of the retreat, an appropriate adjustment will be made.
