Many of us leave the action we desire in the hands of God, supernatural forces, pre-arranged destiny, the sweep of history, Mother Nature, or other forces apparently beyond the influence of individual human beings.
But even if we believe (as I do) that there are larger forces at work in the world, we can still lead our lives recognizing the power of the individual. Maybe the best way to handle such weighty matters is with a light-hearted fable.
A fellow named George prayed all day long one Saturday. The largest lottery drawing was to be held at 6 that evening. Every hour on the hour he prayed: "Dear God, let me win. Dear God, let me win." At a quarter to 6, he said his last prayer. "Dear God, please, please let me win. I'll do anything."
Suddenly he heard a deep voice speak to him from on high. "George, do me a favor. Meet me half way. Buy a ticket."
